KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP say three people were taken to the hospital after a trio of mental health calls on the North Shore and in Brocklehurst Wednesday (March 19) afternoon.

Mounties say they were called to the the 900-block of Singh Street around 2:15 p.m. to reports that an armed youth who was experiencing a mental health crisis had barricaded themselves in their house. While en route, police say they were told of another incident involving an adult with a firearm on the 2000-block of Rosewood Avenue.

“A crisis negotiator and the Southeast District Emergency Response Team (ERT) were called to assist the frontline officers as they faced two high-risk situations simultaneously,” Kamloops RCMP Superintendent Jeff Pelley said, in a news release.

“Fortunately, frontline officers were able to convince the man on Rosewood Avenue to safely surrender without issue, just before 5:00 p.m.”

RCMP say “multiple firearm” were seized from the house on Rosewood, and that the man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.

Back on Singh Street, police say they got into the house in question around 7:30 p.m. and apprehended the youth under the Mental Health Act. This person was taken to hospital “with minimal injuries,” according to police.

“The two events quickly unfolded and involved the presence of weapons, illustrating the dynamic and complex nature of policing, and the dedication of our officers in helping to support public safety,” Pelley added.

“With the assistance of our district and community partners, our officers were able to ensure that both people were taken to hospital to receive the support required to help them through their crisis.”

It is not clear if there will be charges connected to either of these incidents.

“The priority is to get people to the hospital and get them the help that they require to support them through their crisis,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn told CFJC Today.

“They were unrelated calls. They were in two different areas. One involved an adult, one involved a youth, though both involved weapons. One of those weapons was a firearm that was received in the report.”

Evelyn said the third mental health call Wednesday came in around 4:00 p.m. at McDonald Park. She says another youth was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.

“The Kamloops RCMP Detachment is thankful to the public for their support and patience while officers responded to these high-priority events,” Evelyn added.
