KAMLOOPS — While it is spring break across British Columbia, it appears Mother Nature did not get that memo as Environment Canada has upgraded a special weather statement into a snowfall warning for a section of the Coquihalla Highway.

Drivers on the Hope to Merritt section of the highway are being told to prepare for a snowy first day of spring Thursday (March 20) with as much as 20 to 30 cm of snow expected by Friday evening.

“A Pacific frontal system will impact southern B.C. tonight through Friday,” Environment Canada said. “Light to moderate snow will begin tonight, intensify to a period of heavy snow through Friday afternoon, and ease by early evening.”

“The highway is expected to receive total snowfall amounts between 20 to 30 cm by Friday evening.”

A snowfall warning has also been issued on Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton via Allison Pass. A special weather statement remains in effect for Highway 3 between Grand Forks and Creston via the Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass,

“Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays,” Environment Canada added. “Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”
