COLLINS: Sometimes we realize we’ve made a huge blunder when it’s too late to change it

NOTE TO MARK CARNEY: I know you are starting your term with rose-coloured glasses, but you will never forge a strong and lasting relationship with Donald Trump. The man seems too untrustworthy. You could never rely on him because he just makes his own decisions, pulling apart the economy, destroying the education system, praising veterans for their service and then killing their jobs and taking away their benefits.

And a warning to all leaders — do not, under any circumstances, make treaties or undertake an agreement with him. Ontario Premier Doug Ford came on strong when the tariffs were announced but has since turned tail and has softened his stand, so he’s allowed Trump the edge he needs to win that battle. And B.C. Premier David Eby talked about tolls on trucks going to Alaska, but nothing will happen there, either. No one wants to test Trump’s resolve. And I can see why. He is so inconsistent that you don’t know what’s next.

Canada will likely never win the battle without the support of its allies. But to fire off the big salvos and turn turtle ends the fight before it begins. The only person who has really given us speeches which are strong, unwavering, and have provided a rallying point for Canadians were given by the man who can no longer give them — Justin Trudeau. Maybe we need to have a mulligan on the last few months. Maybe we would see Trudeau in a better light.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
