KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE 3:30 p.m.): Don’t put away your cross-country skis just yet as the Overlander Ski Club says it will be open between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Saturday (March 15).

“Feel like you missed out on that great last ski? We have some new snow that we will be grooming up for tomorrow,” the club said in a Friday afternoon update.

“The lodge will be open but the rental shop will be closed.”

ORIGINAL —  Another season of cross-country skiing at the Stake Lake ski trails has come to a close, following a spell of warmer weather in the Kamloops-area.

The Overlander Ski Club announced in a Facebook post on March 12 that its 2024-25 season had ended.

“With some recent warm temperatures our ski season has come to a close,” the Post read. “Thanks to everyone who made the season so incredible. We hope to see you next year.”

The season began on Dec. 15, 2024, following a large dump of snow. It was a “typical opening” for the Overlander Ski Club, which manages 60 km of cross-country ski trails as well as 21 km of snowshoe trails south of Kamloops.

The Overlander Ski Club was forced to pull the plug on its season a few days ahead of schedule. It was initially expecting to wrap up operations on March 16 just as kids in School District 73 began their two-week long spring break.

“The trails in the last 24 hours have experienced much more melt than anticipated. Several large brown patches have appeared,” a March 10 statement from the Overlander Ski Club said. “An anti climactic end to a very great and consistent season.”

“The trails this week will be officially closed. The lights will be turned off in the next few days. You are welcome to ski, but at your own risk and there will be no patrols.”

It’s a different scenario at Harper Mountain as the ski hill is reporting five cm of new snow and 12 cm over the last 48 hours as of Friday (March 14) morning. The ski hill near Kamloops typically closes in late March or early April, depending on the weather.

Meanwhile at Sun Peaks Resort, officials are reporting nine cm of new snow as of 9:43 a.m. Friday, and 13 cm over the past 24 hours. More snow is expected this weekend with Sun Peaks expected to close on April 13.

This recent spell of snow – following a dry February – was brought by a low pressure system over the southeastern B.C. Interior, that saw weather warnings on a number of highways over last weekend and earlier this week.
