KAMLOOPS — Debris from the former Red Bridge has been completely removed from the South Thompson River.

In a news release issued Wednesday (March 12) morning, B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Transit says onshore work on the north and south sides has concluded, and a beach cleanup and Pioneer Park restoration was completed. The ministry says the final sweep of the river was carried out in late February, and a remote-operated vehicle and GPS were used to film the riverbed and track cleanup progress.

The Red Bridge was destroyed by fire on Sept. 19, 2024, and Kamloops RCMP suspect arson was the reason.

The province says it was worked closely with Tkʼemlúps te Secwépemc and the City of Kamloops on-site cleanup and long-term transportation planning. The province says the next step is to begin the planning work to help shape a long-term solution that improves regional transportation, enhances safety and better connects the local community.
