Below-normal March snowpack totals virtually unchanged from February

VICTORIA — A dry month of February means the latest snowpack readings for B.C. remain well below normal — just as they were one month ago.

The latest Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin distributed by the BC River Forecast Centre (BCRFC) shows the province at 73 per cent of normal snowpack on March 1.

Both the North and South Thompson basins showed readings of 78 per cent of normal.

All those totals show very little change from the February 1 readings, though BCRFC says about 80 per cent of seasonal snow accumulation has typically taken place by the beginning of March.

The province notes the first week of March was dry, but an atmospheric river over the March 7-to-9 weekend “brought large amounts of mountain snowpack to much of the province.”

As for the spring outlook, the BCRFC says seasonal flood hazards are expected to be reduced with the lower snowpack. However, the drought outlook remains elevated — especially considering the dry conditions persisting from the past two years.
