Two stranded hikers rescued from Cinnamon Ridge Trail in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Search and Rescue says two hikers were safely rescued from the Cinnamon Ridge Trail near Mount Mara after they got stuck Saturday (March 8) afternoon.

Search Manager Alan Hobler told CFJC Today that KSAR crews were called out by the RCMP around 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

“It turned out the hikers were actually on a cliff-face and one of them stated that they didn’t think they could hold on much longer. That elevated the response,” Hobler said. “We activated Kamloops Fire and Rescue who took over the rescue portion of the search and got them back to their car.”

While there were no injuries, Hobler said the two hikers were “a little rattled” by the ordeal. But he also said it appeared that the pair got lost and were unable to find their way back to the trail.

“There is a trail that leads from the railway tracks up to the top of Mount Mara and it follows a ridge along. They made it about halfway up and lost the trail, went in the wrong direction and couldn’t find the trail again,” Hobler said. “That is when they gave us a call.”

“I’m not sure what they could have done differently,” he added. “That trail can be a little hard to follow sometimes. I think they thought they were on the trail and ended up getting off it.”

Hobler said the incident is a reminder for people to ensure that they’re prepared for the worst while out on a hike, especially with warmer weather around the corner.

“Often when people go out for a short day hike like this, they are not expecting to end up in a situation where they are going to be stranded,” Hobler said. “Always bring the extras and essentials – enough food and water, communication devices, and enough warm clothing – to get through an emergency incident like this one.”

He also said the hikers did a lot right, and that included reaching out for help when they realized they were in trouble.
