COLLINS: The slime is definitely becoming worse in Washington

Mar 9, 2025 | 6:00 AM

GROWING UP, my dad and I went fishing almost every weekend. Some of my fondest memories. The only thing I really disliked was trying to grab the slimy bodies as they flapped around as you tried to gently pry out the hook and release them. That slimy feeling has stayed with me forever.

But the only time it bothers me is when I see a picture of Elon Musk, Donald Trump and J.D. Vance together. Three slimeballs in the same place. You look at them and you wonder what harebrained scheme they’re thinking of next.

They really have no idea what they’re doing. So many orders coming out, being changed, paused, reworked, delayed. It’s bad enough that Canadians have to pay no small amount to keep up with all these changes. But the cost to the U.S. economic machine is huge by comparison. If policies are going to change every few days, it’s a big hit to the bottom line.

Let’s see how long the U. S. can stick it out.

Here’s another scary thought. I was talking last week to a businessman who makes a lot of sense, even if I don’t always agree with him. We were talking about the way Elon and Don were creating havoc throughout the world. I suggested we’d only likely have to deal with them for another four years at most. He said, “You may think so, but I’m telling you it will go on longer than that. Four years down the road, Trump and Musk will have retreated into the background. The guy that worries me the most is J.D. Vance. He is honestly the person I think could divide the nation more than either Trump or Musk.”

Vance’s thoughts are worth reading, but how far can he be believed? A former acquaintance from his law school days said that over a period of time, Vance would change his views on virtually anything that would advance his quest for power. His comments about being run by childless cat ladies, his stand on abortion rights and transgender issues, should make it clear to all that this battle and all it entails will cloud our horizon for some time to come.

And with the possibility of the economic battles, we better hunker down and wait for the Republicans to understand the responsibility they have as elected officials is first of all to their constituents, then to their party. They have no obligation to suck up to Trump, Vance or Musk. The sooner they realize that, the sooner they will find they can indeed Make America Great Again — but the three slimy fish have to be dealt with first.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
