Westsyde Whundas finish fourth at B.C High School basketball championships

LANGLEY, B.C. — The Westsyde Whundas had to settle for a fourth-place finish at the 2A Boys Basketball Provincial Championships in Langley.

The fourth-seeded Whundas were beaten 86-80 by third-seeded Collingwood Secondary Cavaliers from West Vancouver in the bronze medal game Saturday (March 8) at the Langley Events Centre.

Cason Scott led the Whundas with 28 points, while Kiyo Brown had 24 in a losing effort.

The Whundas trailed 28-21 after the first quarter and 43-40 at half-time. They were also behind 68-57 after three, and were unable to pull off the comeback, despite outscoring the Cavaliers 23-18 in the final quarter.

Amir Mojarradi led Collingwood with 21 points, 19 of which came in the second half, as he was named player of the game.

It was Westsyde’s second loss of the tournament, after they fell to top-seeded Pacific Academy Breakers from Surrey 71-66 in Friday’s semi-final, despite leading for more than half the game.

Scott once again led the Whundas with 21 points Friday while Brown had 18. Kooper Groenweld and Calder Macleod also hit double digits with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Breakers’ Earl Akene led all scorers with 28 points, while Judah Ashbee (19) and Adriel Bouguep (13) also finished in the double digits.

Westsyde also picked up wins over St. Michael’s University School of Victoria (73-63) and Khalsa Secondary of Surrey (90-39) en route to the bronze medal game.

Elsewhere, St. Ann’s Academy finished in 14th place after they were beaten 53-48 by the Northside Christian from Vanderhoof in the 1A Boys Basketball Provincial Championships Saturday.

St. Ann’s were also beaten 79-65 by Haida Gwaii Wednesday and 68-40 by Osoyoos. Thursday. They beat Cedars Christian from Prince George 55-43 Friday for their only win of the tournament.
