Stankoven talks shock of deadline deal to Hurricanes, offers message to Kamloops fans who hoped to see him in Vancouver

KAMLOOPS — Logan Stankoven of Kamloops was traded from the Dallas Stars to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday (March 7), which is trade deadline day in the NHL.

Stankoven spoke to Marty Hastings of CFJC Today not long after the deal was finalized.

Below is a transcript of the conversation, which has been edited for length.

MH: How much of a shock was this for you today?
LS: It’s something I didn’t really see coming and, yeah, it just goes to show how much professional sports is a business. It’s definitely disappointing and upsetting, but I’m excited for this new opportunity and I’m going to a team that wants me to be there and, hopefully, I can have a positive impact.

MH: Which parts are the most disappointing?
LS: Just the team that was here in Dallas and the relationships you create. It’s a great organization and you get to build relationships with all of your teammates and the coaching staff and training staff. You’re starting fresh again. [I’m] looking forward to meeting everybody, but at the same time, it is a shock to the system.

MH: The business side is interesting on this one, given the relationship with Tom [Stars’ owner Tom Gaglardi] and your family. Has he reached out to you at all?

LS: No, not at all. I’ve gotten phone calls from [Stars’ GM] Jim Nill and [Stars’ head coach] Pete DeBoer. I’ve just been getting phone calls from people within the Hurricanes’ organization and haven’t heard from him at all, but I get it. It’s a business. Sometimes, deals have got to be made. It’s time to look forward now. It’s a new door to open.

MH: When you look at Carolina, how do you see yourself fitting in?
LS: I like the way they play. They’re kind of all gas. The fans there are really loud and bring lots of energy and they have some great young players like [Seth] Jarvis and Jackson Blake and Sebastian Aho. I’m excited to get to meet all of them and, hopefully, have a good impact there.

MH: I know your dad has arranged a big trip for a bunch of people who were looking forward to seeing you [play for the Stars against the Canucks on Sunday, March 9] and I don’t think Carolina goes there this year. Any message to those fans?
LS: It’s tough. Obviously, when a trip like that is planned and I know there was hundreds of people coming down from Kamloops to watch, yeah, it’s upsetting and it’s tough and I definitely feel bad for everyone, but it’s out of my control and there is nothing I can do about it. Hopefully, everyone that still ends up going has a good time and enjoys their weekend. Maybe down the road when I visit Vancouver next everyone can come down again.
