Kamloops to receive portion of $80M government funding announcement to address homelessness
KAMLOOPS — Kamloops is one of three B.C. cities that will together receive nearly $80 million in government funding to address homeless encampments.
In a news release distributed Friday (March 7), the federal and provincial governments say they will each contribute $39.9 million over the next two years to Kamloops, Vancouver and Abbotsford. The funding is part of the Unsheltered Homelessness and Encampments Initiative (UHEI).
The province says the funding will bolster its existing Homeless Encampment Action Response Team (HEART) and Homeless Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing (HEARTH) programs. The three cities will use the money to implement Community Encampment Response Plans (CERP).
“This funding will help individuals and families transition into safer, more appropriate and stable housing and shelter,” states the release.
