Smoke billowing from structure fire on Shuswap Road near Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — (UPDATE 8:00 p.m.): A structure fire along Shuswap Road sent a thick, black plume of smoke into the sky Thursday (March 6) evening.

The blaze is outside of Kamloops Fire and Rescue’s coverage area, so it is not responding to the fire that began around 5:00 p.m. this evening.

The TNRD also had limited involvement in responding to the blaze as it was outside its fire service areas as well, according to CAO Scott Hildebrand.

“It’s a real difficult situation and it happens all over our 45,000 sq. km regional district,” Hildebrand told CFJC. He also said he was told that “the fire was much calmer and wasn’t spreading as it’s getting cooler.”

While sources to CFJC confirm that people attempted to fight the fire using water from hoses, it’s not clear if the fire has been extinguished.

In addition to the plume of smoke, pictures shared on social media Thursday evening also show flames coming from what appeared to be a large commercial building. Reports also say the fire may have spread to trees in the area, but that has not been confirmed yet by emergency personnel.

DriveBC says the blaze is affecting Shuswap Road in both directions just west of Harper Ranch Road.

This story will be updated when more information is known.
