KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Film Festival is kicking off its 29th edition tonight at the Paramount Theatre downtown. Over the next 10 days, 25 films from all genres will feature on the big screen, including a number of recent Oscar winners, headlined by the 2025 best picture ‘Anora’.

‘Drive Back Home’ will kick off night one of the Kamloops Film Fest. Every night, for the next 10 days, there will be two movies.

“We are showing ‘Anora,’ which — I’m so excited. They did really, really good at the Oscars. This is a film by independent filmmaker Sean Baker that is playing this Saturday night, March 8. Ticket sales are already really, really good, so you will definitely want to get your ticket ahead of time so you don’t miss out,” said Colette Abbott, Film Society Executive Director.

In addition to the best picture winner, the Kamloops Film Fest will also bring the best animated picture of the year, including a weekend matinee, perfect for young families.

“We have a family event happening on Saturday. We are showing the film ‘Flow.’ Beforehand, we will have face painting for the kids, we will have a presentation from BC Conservation, our Kamloops Film Society mascot Gaffer will be wandering around, so you can get photos with him. He’s a giant white dog and really fun. There is lots of stuff. There is something for everyone,” said Abbott.

Other events include a movie trivia night and a chance for aspiring movie makers to learn more about the industry.

“All day Friday and all day Saturday, we have our two-day industry seminar,” said Abbott. “This is called ‘Learn About Film.’ We have partnered with the TNRD Film Commission and we are bringing in speakers from Creative BC, Knowledge Network and the National Film Board. Lots of really great knowledge that will be shared with local filmmakers who really want to take their projects to the next level.”

All details on the lineup and to get tickets can be found online at the film society’s website.
