Two-week tournament blitz coming to Tournament Capital Centre

KAMLOOPS — True to the city’s ‘Tournament Capital’ moniker, Kamloops will be hosting a half-dozen competitions and events in a two-week span, starting this week.

Those include the BC Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Interior Artistic Fun Meet, the Thompson Valley RC Racers Mid-Winter Challenger, the Kamloops Gymnastics Trampoline Centre Invitational, the Gathering our Voices conference, and the Interior Highland Dance Spring Competition.

The packed schedule runs from March 6 to March 23. Most of the events will take place in the Tournament Capital Centre’s fieldhouse and indoor track, the gymnastics and trampoline centre, and the Canada Games Pool — which means residents will need to strategically plan out their trips to the TCC to work around the extra activities.

“It’s going to be challenging for the next couple of weeks — firstly, to find parking here because with all the events going on, we already have challenges with parking,” notes City of Kamloops Business Operations and Events Supervisor Andrew Smeaton. “We want to encourage people to use other modes of transport if they can and we’re using other modes of transport for our event attendees, as well, in terms of busing and biking if you can.”

It will be a busy lead-up to the usual swell of activity that comes with spring break, but the combination of national, provincial and regional events is expected to bring thousands of attendees and spectators to the city.

“The positive coming from this is we get to host five really huge events that are going to be awesome to showcase our community, and people are welcome to come out and watch them and be inspired by the athletes who are competing,” adds Smeaton.

Schedule changes and facility hours information can be found on the city’s website at www.kamloops.ca/tcc.
