KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Film Society is gearing up to host the 29th edition of the Kamloops Film Festival, which gets underway at the Paramount Theatre on Thursday (March 6).

Film Society Executive Director Colette Abbott says there will be films from a variety of genres, including documentaries, comedies, dramas and Canadian films.

“This is definitely our flagship event for the year,” Abbott said on CFJC Midday. “It’s 10 days of films, over 25 film screenings, tons of events. We really put a lot of effort into this. It’s definitely going to be great.”

Abbott says the Kamloops Film Society is also organizing a number of events in conjunction with the film festival, including a two-day seminar on Friday and Saturday this week in partnership with the Thompson Nicola Film Commission.

“We’re bringing in speakers from the National Film Board, Creative BC, knowledge networks, and award-winning filmmakers,” she said. “Anyone who is even thinking about getting into filmmaking, this is definitely an event you want to come out to.”

Other events include a movie trivia night as well as a family-friendly event before the movie Flow, which won Best Animated Feature at this year’s Oscars.

“The film starts at [2:00 p.m.] on March 8, which is a Saturday, but we want everyone to show up around [1:00 p.m.] because we’re going to have free face painting,” Abbott said. “We’re also going have a presentation from the BC Conservation and lots of activities for families.”

Other Oscar winners being screened during the Kamloops Film Festival include Best Picture Winner Anora, and The Brutalist, for which Adrien Brody won Best Actor. Nickel Boys, which was nominated for two Oscars will also be screened.
