VANCOUVER — It’s the end of the line for the TRU WolfPack women’s volleyball team and it came at the hands of the two-time defending national champions Saturday (March 1).

The WolfPack bow out of Canada West playoffs after a 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-7) loss to the UBC Thunderbirds, who won both games of the best-of-three quarter-final series to advance to the semi-finals.

“That was not the way we wanted to go out, but I thought the battle level was there. I didn’t think the first set was super indicative of that, but in the second set I thought we played our game,” WolfPack Head Coach Chad Grimm said.

“We didn’t manage to execute for long enough periods of time and I think that was the difference. We had flashes but we have to learn to execute at a higher level for longer time if we want to take the next step that includes getting past teams like UBC.”

First Team Canada West All-Star Rida Erlalelitepe led the WolfPack with 11 kills, while Brooklyn Olfert added five kills and a team-high eight digs. Faith Christensen also had one solo and three block assists for TRU at the War Memorial Gym.

While its not the end to the season they wanted, this was the first WolfPack women’s volleyball team that was ranked in the top 10 in the country for the entire season. They went into Canada West playoffs as the fifth seed, while UBC was the fourth seed.

“We’ll reflect on what was generally a positive season,” Grimm added. “We had some growth and were learning how to deal with the expectations that come with being a nationally top 10 ranked team all year and what that feels like.”

“Hopefully we gain some growth out of that and are able to use that experience to drive us forward next season.”
