SUN PEAKS, B.C. — Rob O’Toole is set to be acclaimed as the second-ever mayor of Sun Peaks.

O’Toole, who was elected to Sun Peaks council in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, resigned in early February to run for mayor in the hopes of succeeding Al Raine, who passed away in December after 14 years in the role.

Raine was the only person to ever serve as mayor of Sun Peaks after it was incorporated in June 2010

“[Al] left things in a really good place because he’s imparted that wisdom and that sense of passion for community,” O’Toole told CFJC Today in December.

According to the Sun Peaks Mountain Resort Municipality, O’Toole was the only person to come forward as a candidate for mayor before the 4:00 p.m. deadline on Friday (Feb. 28).

There are four people – Dave Burnham, Katherine Campbell, Brian Gillespie, and Alice Muirhead – who stepped up to run for O’Toole’s council seat as he was required under the Local Government Act to step down to run for mayor.

Candidates have until Friday, March 7 to withdraw their names, with the notice of election then due to be posted the following Monday, March 10. That is also the date when candidates will be acclaimed to office.

If needed, Sun Peaks residents will head to the polls on Saturday, April 5, with the polling station at the Sun Peaks Centre. There will also be one day of advanced polls at the Sun Peaks Municipal Office on Wednesday, March 26.
