KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers lost a little bit of ground in the WHL playoff race after another 4-2 loss to the Prince George Cougars Saturday (March 1) night.

The Blazers led 2-0 early in the second period but gave up four unanswered goals for their second defeat of the weekend, this time at Sandman Centre.

Conner Radke scored the only goal of the first period before Beau Courtney doubled the Blazers’ lead with a one-timer inside two minutes of the second period.

The Cougars however fought back and tied the game at 2-2 after two periods, as Terik Parascak and Borya Valis beat Dylan Ernst in the Blazers’ net. Third period goals from Koehn Ziemmer on the power play and Riley Heidt into an empty net gave the Cougars the 4-2 win.

Ernst finished 26 saves on 29 shots and was named the second star on the night. He was bested by Cougars goaltender Cooper Michaluk, who finished with 31 saves on 33 shots, and was named the game’s first star.

With 47 points from 59 games, the Blazers remain in 10th in the WHL’s Western Conference, however they are now five points back of the final playoff spot as both the Wenatchee Wild and the Seattle Thunderbirds won their games Saturday night.

The Blazers will head on the road to play the eight-placed Thunderbirds on Tuesday, March 4, before heading further south to play the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday night.

Their next game at Sandman Centre will be on Saturday, March 8 against the Vancouver Giants.
