MERRITT, B.C. — A universal water metering program for Merritt residents is on its way.
In a news release issued Thursday (Feb. 27), the City of Merritt says a standard water meter will be installed in every household free of charge. An amended waterworks bylaw was adopted by Merritt council earlier this week.
According to the city, Merritt residents and businesses consume water at a rate above the national average, which is believed to be due to water being lost in aging lines. The city says the water meter program will be able to identify deficiencies in its infrastructure and decrease water usage.
The B.C. government committed $3 million to the City of Merritt in 2023 to install new water meters.
