RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL DENIALISM

‘That is all I expected him to do’; Jules thanks MLA Milobar for standing up in Victoria

KAMLOOPS — While not saying any names directly, Kamloops Centre MLA Peter Milobar’s comments earlier this week were undoubtably focused on social media comments made from within his own Conservative caucus.

When Milobar rose in the B.C. legislature on Tuesday (Feb 25) to speak out against residential school denialism, he spoke directly to his commitment to former Tk’emlúps Kukpi7 Manny Jules that he would be a voice against denialism in Victoria. For Jules, Milobar was true to his word.

“He addressed the issue head-on, and that is all I expected him to do, and expect him to do,” said Jules. “I think it’s clear where he stands. And we are not in denial of history and you (CFJC‘s crew) are right in my office which is the former residential school, so you can’t deny that history took place.”

Facing residential school denialism is nothing new for Jules, who attended the Kamloops Indian Residential School as a day scholar. He believes the problems relate back to the need for better education.

“Individuals who have lived through the trauma, of course, will relate to it. Those who are in denial that this happened… of course, it’s trying to erase history and history can’t be erased. History is something that we have to be able to deal with. If you don’t know your history, you won’t know how to move forward. And we have to address that fundamentally,” Jules told CFJC News.
