City of Kamloops finishes repair on water main leak, asks residents to continue water conservation for 24 hours

KAMLOOPS — Residents in southwest Kamloops neighbourhoods are still being asked to conserve water after crews repaired a water main leak on Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 26).

The City of Kamloops has confirmed that the leak was connected to one of the city’s main feeder lines, affecting approximately one-third of the Kamloops population. Crews had been on site in Peterson Creek Park since early Wednesday morning, completing the repair just before 3:00 p.m.

“We have activated two of our master service agreements — our geotechnical engineering as well as our civil construction contractors — and they are on site right now. We have determined it is an air-release valve failure, so thankfully that is what it is. It’s not a major pipe break,” said Glen Farrow, acting utilities and environmental services manager.

The city is still working to balance water levels between city reservoirs to ensure everybody has enough water, with residents asked to continue conserving water for the next 24 hours.

“Moving forward, we just continue to encourage residents to watch their consumption and reduce any non-essential water use. Anything really south of the Trans Canada Highway — so Upper Sahali, Aberdeen, Lac le Juene, Pineview Valley and even Dufferin and that area, as well. At this point, our reservoirs do have a lot of capacity. We were prepared for this,” said Farrow.
