COLUMBUS, OHIO — Kamloops native Sienna Angove won her first career gold medal at the Big Ten women’s swimming and diving championships in Columbus, Ohio this weekend as a member of the Ohio State (OSU) Buckeyes.

The Sa-Hali Secondary School graduate emerged victorious in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:03.92 Friday (Feb. 21) evening. She finished 933 milliseconds ahead of second place finisher Mia Rankin, also of Ohio State University.

“It’s really exciting. It’s really great to see all of the support from everyone,” Angove said, in an interview shared online by the Buckeyes. “I know I always have a really strong last 100 [yards] so I just though if I could stick with everyone through the first 300, that I could bring it home.”

Angove also won a bronze in the 200 yard individual medley on Thursday, her first career individual medal, with a time of 1:55.06. She was also part of the OSU team that won a silver in the 800 yard freestyle relay on Wednesday, with a cumulative time of 6:54.53.

Saturday morning, Angove finished 15th in the women’s 100 yard freestyle with a time of 48.78 seconds. That was good enough to earn her a spot in the B Final, where she finished second with a time of 48.19 seconds, one millisecond behind teammate Rache Bockrath.

She also just missed out on another bronze medal as the OSU team swam to a fourth place finish in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

“I think just the culture of this school and all of the work that we put in, I think it just comes to show at the end of season,” Angove said.

The Buckeyes also won the overall Big Ten conference title for the fifth time in the last six years, as they finished with 1313.5 points ahead of Indiana University (1255.5)  and the University of Michigan (1149.5) in the overall standings

Angove, 18, finished just shy of qualifying for the Canadian relay teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She told CFJC Today in June that she has her eyes set on representing Team Canada at 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

“LA 2028 is definitely the big goal,” Angove said. “World Championships and Commonwealth Games [in Glasgow in 2026] are in between, so I’ll focus on making those teams and seeing if I can even reach the podium.”
