WINNIPEG — The Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack men’s basketball team have advanced to the quarter-finals of the Canada West playoffs with their first-ever win over the Alberta Golden Bears.

The WolfPack beat the Golden Bears 78-63 in a play-in game Friday (Feb. 21) to record their first Canada West playoff win since the 2016-17 season. It was also head coach Chad Jacobson‘s first playoff win behind the TRU bench.

The WolfPack were led by their balanced offensive attack that saw four players hit double digits. Dami Farinloye and Denys Bachurin led with 15 points each. Steve Stinson had 13 points, while Asher Mayan had 10.

“It was super cool, especially having my family in here and in a familiar gym,” Farinloye, the Winnipeg native said. “It’s nice getting the win too. This team is really a brotherhood, fighting through adversity. We came together as a team and had each other’s backs.”

The WolfPack led for over 35 minutes and never trailed by more than four on the night. They also outscored the Golden Bears 24-14 in the fourth quarter en route to victory.

Alberta’s Isaac Simon led all scorers with 25 points in a losing effort. He was the only Golden Bear to reach double-digits in scoring.

The WolfPack will now face the Manitoba Bisons in Saturday’s quarter-final game which is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. B.C. time.  A win in Winnipeg would see the WolfPack advance to the Canada West semifinals for the first time since 2015-16.

It’ll be tough as the Bison’s won the Prairie Division at 16-4, while the WolfPack were fourth in the Pacific at 10-10.
