Tk’emlúps woman, Lower Nicola public works team take home national awards for water stewardship

CALGARY — A Tk’emlúps woman and a Merritt-area First Nation have been honoured for their leadership in the area water stewardship.

The 2024 National First Nations Water Leadership Awards were handed out at the Assembly of First Nations’ National Housing and Infrastructure Conference in Calgary Thursday (Feb. 20).

One of the awards was given to Katy Thorne, a water distribution and wastewater collection operator for Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc.

Thorne was recognized for bring “instrumental in building a network of water operators to push the boundaries of conventional training and develop solutions for many of the obstacles the water operator community faces,” according to a news release.
