KAMLOOPS — Transitional housing could be coming to River Street in Kamloops.

BC Housing confirmed to CFJC Today they are in early-stage conversations with the City of Kamloops about the plot of land at 1286-1298 River St.

BC Housing stated the project would be temporary in nature, not be a shelter and that they are currently exploring the feasibility of the proposal.

“The proposed project would be funded through the Homeless Encampment Action Response Temporary Housing (HEARTH) and would not be a shelter. HEARTH housing is transitional housing that provides enhanced supports for people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness who are ready to move on from shelters,” stated BC Housing in an email to CFJC News.

The HEARTH program is the same funding stream that helped create the new North Shore Access Hub.

“Unlike an overnight shelter, transitional housing has self-contained units with locking doors and rooms for personal possessions and residents pay rent,” continued the BC Housing statement.

At this time, BC Housing was unable to confirm a unit count for the proposal, or a timeline.

“BC Housing is committed to keeping the community informed throughout this process,” continued the email.
