KAMLOOPS — Students from Rayleigh Elementary School were at the Shores Retirement Residence on Valentine’s Day Friday (Feb. 14) to show love and appreciation for the older generation.

Around 45 students spread some love and shared some kindness as they serenaded the 30 residents at the facility located on the north shore of Kamloops.

“I loved watching them sing there was one little guy who was amazing and took my eye right away,” said 81-year-old Sandy Bergstrand.

Third-grader Sky Mclaren said the songs they sang were a “Medium-ish difficulty.”

“I knew about the song, What a Wonderful World but I didn’t know about You Are Enough but now I know it well,” Mclaren said.

Once the performances were over, the students grouped up and went off to show residents at The Shore what they called the Compassion Project.

“The Compassion Project is something to spread and show compassion to others,” said grade 7 student, Hannah Hallberg.

Some of the residents weren’t able to hold back their emotions after the students gave them Valentine’s Day cards

“She was a lovely young girl, she walked away and came back and still remembered my name,” said Bergstrand.

Students also told the seniors stories about their days and what they’ve been up to this week.

“The lady I gave the Valentine to was a teacher she taught grades 6, 7, 8 classes maybe split classes and I thought that was cool,” said Jaxson Pascmko a sixth-grade student.

Those seniors reciprocated with stories from their lives and careers.

“[The girl I talked to] had been doing 4-H. It was interesting talking to her and she talked to me about her favourite steer and how her favourite was the Black Angus which was mine too,” said Bergstrand.

The students, seniors, and teachers all said they look forward Valentine’s Day next yet again to bring some love and kindness to those who need it most.
