‘That’s not healthy, it doesn’t help the community’; Minister Kahlon set to respond to Kamloops council’s request for meeting

KAMLOOPS — In January, Kamloops city council requested a meeting with Ravi Kahlon, the B.C. Minister responsible for Municipal Affairs.

The request followed a letter from Kahlon, who asked the CIty for an update on how it has implemented and followed through on recommendation made by municipal adviser Henry Braun.

Braun, the former mayor of Abbotsford, made 23 recommendations – 13 for council as a whole and 10 solely for Hamer-Jackson. He also highlighted 16 main challenges, and stated the relationship between the mayor and council was “not normal.”

While no date is set, Kahlon told CFJC he will be in Kamloops soon.

“I will be responding to the request,” Kahlon said. “I have in the past had a good relationship with council and mayor, and I want to make sure that whatever happens as we go forward, it’s in the best interest of the people of Kamloops.”

In a letter to council, Kahlon said while council has made some progress towards implementing the recommendations of the report, he also said that governance challenges were still continuing.

“I would like to see Kamloops to be known again as the Tournament Capital and not for the disputes that we are seeing at the mayor and council level,” Kahlon told CFJC.

“That’s not healthy, it doesn’t help the community and it doesn’t help address the major challenges we have in our communities.”
