Kamloops firefighters battle blaze at abandoned outbuilding downtown

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops firefighters made relatively quick work of a fire at an abandoned building in downtown Kamloops Sunday (Feb. 9) night.

Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) Platoon Captain Ken Hartt says crews were called to 624 Seymour Street around 8:00 p.m., and arrived to find flames and smoke billowing from a building in the alley near Sixth Avenue and Seymour Street.

“Initially we didn’t know what was on fire but as we got closer we could tell it wasn’t an occupied business or a family dwelling and that it was an outbuilding,” Hartt told CFJC Today.

He said crews “did a good job” to keep the flames from spreading to other nearby buildings or the power pole in the vicinity.

“It’s a tight alleyway and the only hydrant we had was on Seymour Street [in front of the Crossroads Inn] so we had to block off Seymour and Sixth,” Hartt said. “We used two attack lines to put the fire out and stood by to make sure that nothing else caught on fire.”

It’s not clear what caused the fire, but Fire Prevention Officers will scour the scene Monday morning to gather more information.

“As far as I know [the building] was not occupied. It was boarded up,” Hartt said. “RCMP is going to stay with it overnight and make sure nobody goes in or out. We’ll come back in the morning and do an investigation and see if we can find a cause.”
