Inaugural name that snowplow contest in Kamloops to end Monday

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents have less than two days to vote for their favourites in the City’s name the snowplow contest.

Parks and Streets Manager Jeff Putnam says people have until Monday (Feb. 10) to enter the contest or vote on their favourite names for one of six pieces of equipment in the city’s snow clearing fleet.

“There are multiple popular names that have been submitted by more than one person,” Putnam said. “We’re just thrilled with the interest and engagement from the community.”

“This is the first time the city has ever done anything like a naming contest for fleet. I know many other cities have [run similar contests] and with the success we’ve had maybe we’ll do it in other areas of the city as well.”

While people are able to submit as many names as they like, the City requires that they be family friendly. Only names made by children under the age of 16 will be considered for the contest.

Putnam told CFJC that once the deadline has passed, city staff will review the submissions to ensure that all of the criteria is met.

“It’ll take a week or two, but we’re excited about it,” he said. “We’ve had some really creative and funny names that have come forward and we’re excited to come develop a shortlist and then go from there on making some final decisions.”

As of publishing, the top-five most popular names were Han Snowlo, Plowey Mc Plowface, Darth Grader, Snow Mater, and Plow Patrol. All of those names though appear to have been submitted by two people, meaning the field still appears to be wide open at this time.

Putnam says in addition to a prize pack and bragging rights, the winners will get their picture taken with the vehicle they’ve named.

“We thought six is a good number for six different types of equipment,” Putnam said, noting the city has a fleet of about pieces 50 snow clearing equipment from sand trucks and graders to loaders and pickup trucks. “The winning names will get applied to that piece of equipment for the foreseeable future until we run the contest again.”
