KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) crews put their ice rescue training to good use on Tuesday, to save a deer along the Thompson River.

KFR says a member of the public had called in about a deer on the ice in the Valleyview / Dallas area. Firefighters quickly suited up and pulled the deer to shore, where it walked away unscathed.

“It’s a really good reminder, especially at this time of year when it’s really cold, first and foremost, don’t go on the ice of our rivers,” reiterates KFR Life Safety Educator Captain Jeff Pont. “If you fall through, the currents can carry you under the ice really quickly. If you’re stuck, make sure you call us to get you out of there.”

The fire department says this deer rescue is also an example of how to properly handle a situation where you spot an animal or pet that is stuck on the ice. Best practice is to stay on the shore and call emergency responders who have ice rescue equipment.

“We will go out and get animals, we will go out and get pets but the most common reason people end up in the water is to rescue their pets, so keep an eye on your pet around river shores, around the lake, and if it falls in, call us. We’ll get there and we’ll get it out,” adds Pont.
