KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers surrendered a pair of leads but ended up coming back to Canada with a point after a 5-4 overtime loss to the top team in the Western Hockey League (WHL).

The Blazers took on the Everett Silvertips on the road Sunday (Feb. 2) to wrap up a stretch of four games in five nights. Kamloops struck first in the final minutes of the first period where Vit Zahejsky fired the puck home from the left circle.

The Blazers kept momentum early in the second period where Kamloops’ Jordan Keller put back a juicy rebound on the power to make it a 2-0 game.

In response, the Silvertips showed why they’re leading the overall WHL standings, scoring three unanswered goals in a 6:47 stretch – including fortunate bounces off the end boards and Blazers goaltender Logan Edmonstone and in.

But the Blazers had a similar stretch to close the second period and open the third like they did earlier. Keller redirected Nathan Behm’s pass in front while Josh Kelly put back a rebound in tight, and the Blazers found themselves with a 4-3 lead.

However, the Silvertips returned serve again with a tying goal nearly six minutes later. With a 4-on-3 power play in overtime, Tarin Smith fired a wrist shot above the slot and gave the Silvertips the 5-4 win.

The Blazers fall to 18-26-4-0 on the 2024-25 WHL season, good for 40 points in 48 games. They’re fourth in the B.C. Division and hanging on to the eighth and final WHL Western Conference playoff spot.

The Blazers welcome the Silvertips to Kamloops for a rematch on Friday (Feb. 7). Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. from Sandman Centre.
