CALGARY — The Kamloops-based Holly Hafeli rink will settle for a silver medal after they were blanked 6-0 by the University of Regina in the final of the Canada West Curling Championships Sunday (Feb. 2) afternoon.

The TRU foursome – that also features Natalie Hafeli, Jorja Kopytko, and Hannah O’Neil – gave up singles to Chloe Johnstone’s rink in the first, second, fourth, and fifth ends. Regina then piled on two more in the sixth end to win the Canada West gold medal.

Sunday’s final was the second defeat of the weekend for the Hafeli rink as they finished with a 4-2 record at the Calgary Curling Club.

TRU wrapped up the round robin stage of the Canada West tournament with a 3-1 record. They beat Victoria 8-4 but lost to Calgary 7-6 on Friday, Jan. 31. They followed that up with an 8-3 win over Brandon and a 5-4 win over Lethbridge Saturday.

The WolfPack then beat Regina 5-4 in an extra end in Saturday’s Page Playoff game to qualify for the gold medal game.

The Hafeli rink will be competing at the 2025 U SPORTS national championships which will be hosted by the University of Lethbridge. The two finalists from the Canada West Championships qualified for nationals which will be held between Feb. 24 and 28.

The TRU WolfPack men’s curling team came up just short in their bid to clinch a berth at nationals as they were beaten 6-4 by eventual champions Regina in a Sunday morning semi-final.

The WolfPack foursome – that features Fort McMurray natives Calder and Coburn Fadden, Victoria’s Duncan Silversides, and New Hazelton’s Kyron Suhan – led the semi-final 2-1 after three ends before Josh Bryden’s Regina rink bounced back with a four-point fourth end.

While Regina extended their lead to 6-2 after six ends, the WolfPack scored two in the seventh to make it a 6-4 game. But needing at least a double to extend proceedings, the WolfPack came up short in the final end and the two teams shook hands.

The WolfPack men finished the weekend tournament with four wins and two losses. Both those losses came in the playoffs.

TRU beat the University of Alberta 5-4 and Brandon 7-3 in round robin action on Friday. They followed that up with a 5-4 win over Victoria and a 10-6 win over Lethbridge Saturday.

The WolfPack then fell 6-5 in an extra end to Dinos in Saturday’s Page Playoff game.
