CALGARY – The Holly Hafeli rink will play for a Canada West gold medal at the Calgary Curling Club Sunday (Feb. 2) afternoon.

The Kamloops-based rink, which is representing the TRU WolfPack, advanced directly to the gold medal game after a 5-4 win over the Regina Cougars in the Page Playoff game.

The TRU foursome – that also features Natalie Hafeli, Jorja Kopytko, and Hannah O’Neil – scored one in the eighth and one in the extra end against Regina to set up the gold medal showdown.

They’ll play the winner of the semi-final between Regina and the Victoria Vikes at 1:00 p.m. PT Sunday.

“We actually hadn’t been playing that well (coming into the page playoff) – just squeaking the wins out. But this was more us – making the shots…they just played well,” Thompson Rivers coach Monica Makar said, in a Canada West recap.

It was the third win of the day for the TRU women, who were also victorious over the Lethbridge Pronghorns 5-4 and the Brandon Bobcats 8-3. They finished the round robin stage of the tournament with a 3-1 record, following an 8-4 win over Victoria and a 7-6 loss to Calgary Friday.

The WolfPack men’s team will play Regina in a semi-final at 8:00 a.m. PT Sunday after they fell 6-5 in an extra end to the still-undefeated Calgary Dinos in the Page Playoff Saturday.

The winner of that semi-final will play the Dinos in Sunday’s final, also scheduled for 1:00 p.m. PT.

The WolfPack rink – that features Fort McMurray natives Calder and Coburn Fadden, Victoria’s Duncan Silversides, and New Hazelton’s Kyron Suhan – jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two ends, but the Dinos Calgary leveled things back up after four ends.

Tied after the eighth end, the Dinos positioned themselves to eke out the win in the extra end.

“We knew [Thompson Rivers] was going to be good, as well. They came into this undefeated, as well, and we saw them beat UofA in that first game where they made a wickedly good shot for that win,” Dinos head coach Laine Peters said.

The WolfPack men finished the round robin stages with a 4-0 record. They beat the University of Alberta 5-4 and Brandon 7-3 on Friday and followed that up with a 5-4 win over Victoria and a 10-6 win over Lethbridge Saturday.

With a guaranteed top-two finish, the WolfPack women have punched their ticket to the 2025 U SPORTS Championships, scheduled for Feb. 24 to 28 in Lethbridge.

A win in Sunday’s semi-final will see the TRU men qualify for nationals as well.
