KAMLOOPS — Nolan MacPherson scored the winner for his hometown Kamloops Storm as they beat the Merritt Centennials 3-2 at McArthur Island in Saturday (Feb. 1) night’s Coquihalla Clash.

The 19-year old helped the Storm complete the season double over the Centennials. Kamloops also beat Merritt 4-3 in overtime in September in the Centennials’ first home game since they moved to the KIJHL.

Twice the Centennials led in Saturday’s highly anticipated showdown courtesy Sam Giangualano at 7:18 of the first and Steven Foster at 2:24 of the second period.

But the Storm responded on both occasions through David Ander at 9:55 of the first and Luke Rothfos at 7:03 of the second.

MacPherson then scored the only goal of the third period at 11:15 to help the Storm improve to 20-17-1-0 on the season. They moved into second place in the Doug Birks Division with 41 points from 38 games.

The playoff-bound Cents dropped to 23-12-3-1 and remain in third in the Bill Ohlhausen Division, with 50 points from 39 games.

Brenner Fyfe made 27 saves on 29 shots to pick up the win for the Storm in front of 1,143 fans at McArthur Island. Merritt’s Andrew Krakora allowed three goals on 29 shots in a losing effort.

The Storm have six games left in the 2024/25 KIJHL regular season, starting with a weekend doubleheader in Quesnel against the River Rush Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8.

Next up for the Centennials, who have five games left, is a game in Kelowna against the Chiefs on Saturday, Feb. 8.
