WolfPack men clinch playoff berth with win over UBCO Heat

KELOWNA — The TRU WolfPack men’s basketball team are playoff bound for the first since the 2021-22 Canada West season.

The WolfPack men beat the UBC Okanagan Heat by a score of 86-73 in Kelowna Friday (Jan. 31) to improve to 9-8 on the season, while the Heat dropped to 4-11.

Trailing 62-61 after three quarters, the WolfPack went on a 17-4 run to close out the game with a 13 point win at the UBCO gymnasium.

Dami Farinloye finished with 17 points and four assists for the WolfPack, while Cyrus Harrison and Denys Bachurin finished with 13 and 10 points respectively. Asher Mayan was four of five from long range as he finished with 12 points and six rebounds.

At 906 career points, Mayan is the fifth WolfPack in program history to break the 900 point mark, following Joe Davis (1154), Greg Stewart (1024), Josh Wolfram (962) and Micheal Rouault (951).

Friday’s win also mean the men’s edition of the President’s Cup, the competition for bragging rights between TRU and UBCO in basketball, soccer and volleyball will come down to the final game at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Kelowna.

The WolfPack women couldn’t repeat the heroics from last weekend, as they dropped an 80-38 decision to the Heat. They managed just two points in the second quarter en route to their 16th defeat of the season.

Danijela Kovacevic led the WolfPack with ten points, while Kate De La Mare and Jocelyn Orr added five each.

The result also secured the 2025 women’s Presidents’ Cup for UBC Okanagan.

The women’s teams will rematch in Kelowna with tip-off scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
