Snowfall warning, travel advisory in effect on Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt

KAMLOOPS — Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Hope to Merritt section of the Coquihalla Highway with between 15 and 25 cm of snow expected to fall on that stretch of highway Saturday (Feb. 1).

“A frontal system is bringing snow to southwestern BC,” the weather agency said. “The snow will ease this evening.”

“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations. Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”

A travel advisory is in effect between Exit 202: Portia and Exit 250: Larson Hill because of blowing snow and limited visibility.

“Drive to conditions and watch for crews working,” a statement from DriveBC said.

Environment Canada also says a wintry mix of weather conditions is expected to affect Metro Vancouver over the next few days, prompting the weather agency to issue a snowfall warning early Saturday morning.

Weather alerts are also in effect for Vancouver Island, the Southern Gulf Islands, Sunshine Coast, Howe Sound, Whistler, and the Fraser Valley.

Saturday’s snowfall warning on the Coquihalla follows Friday’s winter storm warning that also covered the Hope to Merritt section. Environment Canada was expecting as much as 35 centimetres of snow to fall by this morning before a brief reprieve.
