TRU women’s basketball team looks to keep foot on gas pedal after clinching first victory on Saturday

KAMLOOPS – It was business as usual Monday morning (Jan. 27) for the TRU women’s basketball team — although there were some smiles and perhaps some relief after the players clinched their first victory of the season, a 73-61 win over the UNBC Timberwolves.

“It was honestly amazing — especially to do it on home court in front of friends and family,” Priyanca Sundher told CFJC Today. “It was really just a great feeling and to do it with the other seniors on the team was just amazing.”

Saturday was also seniors’ night. Fourth-year guards Sundher and Danijela Kovacevic stood out in the last home game of their Canada West careers. Sundher recorded 26 points and Kovacevic added 22 points, combining to score over half of the team’s total in the victory.

“We just try to play in the moment and get a stop, stop, score,” said Kovacevic. “We just stay in the moment and try to do our job and we know if we do our job that we will win.”

The win was interim head coach Scott Clark’s first victory since taking over the team halfway through the season. Clark knows he has coached the women hard and is pleased to see the team finally get a result to go their way.

“They’ve been really good to me in terms of listening and trying and being enthusiastic regardless of the results,” said Clark. “There have been a couple of other times when I almost felt like they deserved a bit better fate than they had. To see them break through, I was proud of them and I was just really happy for them.”

The TRU Wolfpack now prepares for a road trip to UBCO as they take on the 4-10 Heat on Friday (Jan. 31) and Saturday.
