KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is holding an open house this Thursday, Jan. 30, where residents will be able to learn more about a series of prescribed burn projects that are set to take place this spring.

In a statement, the city says the prescribed burns are planned for Rose Hill Park (8 ha), Peterson Creek Nature Park (17 ha), and a publicly-owned area of the Lac Du Bois Grasslands (10 ha).

The work is expected to happen sometime between March and April ahead of the peak of the summer fire season, though it may be delayed to the fall if conditions are unfavourable.

“Temporary trail closures and visible smoke should be expected,” the City of Kamloops statement said.

Thursday’s open house, which will be organized in partnership with Tkemlúps te Secwépemc and BC Wildfire Service, will take place at the Sandman Centre between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. The city says attendees will be able to ask questions about the work that is planned directly to the project partners.

“Prescribed fire is a proven land management tool that helps restore ecological balance, protect critical infrastructure, and enhance community safety by reducing the intensity and spread of potential wildfires,’ the city said.

“The prescribed burn project objectives include wildfire risk reduction, low-intensity surface fire application, ecological restoration, invasive species removal and overgrown sagebrush reduction.”

“All residents are welcome to attend and learn about this essential work to protect our community and environment,” the city said.
