EDMONTON — The TRU volleyball teams dropped their Saturday (Jan. 25) games in Edmonton against the nationally ranked University of Alberta.

The WolfPack women, who are ranked fifth in the nation, lost a five-set thriller 3-2 (25-22, 21-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-13) loss to the Alberta Pandas, who are ranked fourth.

Maria Dancheva and Rida Erlalelitepe led the way for the 10-4 WolfPack with 18 kills each, while Brooklyn Olfert added 12. Libby Meldrum provided the offence with 40 assists.

“Overall it was a much more stable effort from our crew. We were more emotionally stable and that just allowed us to play our game,” head Coach Chad Grimm said.

“When you have two good teams it’s going to come down to small margins and I think we can learn a couple things from some critical periods and learn to deal with that extra stress.”

The TRU men were unable to repeat their heroics from a night before, as they were beaten 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-21) by the Alberta Golden Bears to split the weekend against the second tanked team in the nation.

Sam Flowerday hit .423 per cent on the night to rack up 13 kills on 26 attacks, while Matthew Hamilton added 11 kills of his own. The brothers Sodaro also chimed in as Walker recorded 27 assists while Mason had four assisted blocks.

The TRU volleyball teams will head back on the road next weekend for games in Vancouver against the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1.

It’ll be another tough weekend as the UBC women are the top ranked team in Canada, while the men are ranked fifth.
