KAMLOOPS — The man who directed several theatrical productions in Kamloops over eight years is no longer with Western Canada Theatre (WCT).

WCT announced James MacDonald departed the Kamloops professional theatre company as its artistic director. A reason for the departure and a quote from MacDonald were not provided in a news release issued late Tuesday (Jan. 21).

“James is a talented actor and director. We wish him well in his future endeavors,” Chrystie Stewart, WCT board president states. “WCT is in its 50th year of operations and is steadfastly maintaining its place on the stage as a national theatre company. We attribute the success to the enthusiastic audience, the dedication of our staff and volunteers, and the generous contributions by our sponsors and donors. For a city of this size, we are one of kind.”

MacDonald arrived in Kamloops for WCT’s 2017-18 season. He has directed productions such as Grease, GLORY, Jesus Christ Superstar, Shrek, the Sound of Music, Vimy and the Wizard of Oz. He sat on the board of Tourism Kamloops, and WCT states he was instrumental in advocating for the future Kamloops performing arts centre.

For the near future, WCT states the department leads and executive director Matt Eger are confident the 2024-25 season will proceed as normal. Additionally, WCT says Scott Bellis will direct the April production of Pride and Prejudice, and planning for its 50th anniversary season in 2025-26 is ongoing.
