KAMLOOPS — A Westsyde Secondary School graduate has committed to playing university soccer for the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack.

The WolfPack have announced the signing of Sasha Ryga, who has spent the last few years in Kamloops playing for Okanagan United FC, formerly the Thompson Okanagan Football Club (TOFC).

“The program is filled with incredibly talented players as well as an outstanding coach and staff that will help me further develop as a player,” Ryga said in a statement. “The WolfPack is recognized nationally as a strong program and I’ve always wanted to be a part of it.”

In addition to playing in the BC Soccer Premier League (BC SPL) Ryga has spent time developing his game in Spain, England and most recently Brazil.

“Ever since I was a kid, soccer has always been a main priority in my life due to my love and passion for the game and my willingness to strive for success,” Ryga added. “I am extremely grateful for the mindset my mother has planted in me to think big, which has provided countless opportunities to venture outside of Canada.”

WolfPack men’s head coach John Antulov said he’s pleased to add the versatile 5-11 midfielder, who is originally from Cloverdale, to the roster for the 2025 season.

“Sasha is one of those guys that I have worked with over the last three or four years and I think he has a lot of different aspects to his game,” said Antulov. “He has the ability to go forward but also to defend. He has really good soccer IQ and I think he has the capacity to play different positions. He gives us that versatility on both sides of the ball.”

“He started coming out to my Whitecaps Academy and I saw some really good things in him and definitely he was a player that we were going to keep an eye on. He continued to work and develop to the point where he’s able to come into our program.”

Ryga plans to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in History at Thompson Rivers University.
