COLLINS: The end of the world as we know it?
TOMORROW, DONALD TRUMP IS BACK. And there is no one who knows for sure — even Trump himself — in which direction the US, and ultimately the world, will head. If Trump carries out even a quarter of what he has promised, the economic repercussions for some industries will be unfathomable. And the U.S. will pay a bigger price than they think.
But before Trump realizes that his plan isn’t working, many countries, including Canada, will wind up in serious circumstances. We need to be prepared to fight this “economic war,” as our premier put it. And we all have to stand up to the power-hungry behemoth below the 49th.
Canada is not without weapons in this war, but we will suffer pain for some time. Make no mistake about it — In BC, the premier says we will lose billions. Alberta, which is pursuing a different plan than the rest of the country, will feel it, too.
At the end of the day, we’ll still be here. But America will be in worse shape than it is now. And Trump’s isolationist attitude will put his country into a situation that will be hard to recover from. Tariffs, buy only local, make our own cars, kick out the immigrants and force people to do what the Donald wants in order to avoid a witch hunt. All of this is going to lead to a mistrust that America will have to put up with for a long time to come.
