KAMLOOPS — BGC Kamloops, formerly known as the Boys and Girls Club, received a $25,000 donation Thursday (Jan. 16), courtesy of Farm2Chefs.

Farm2Chefs is a local non-profit that works with chefs and Kamloops food producers to bolster connections and education around food sustainability. The money comes from ticket sales and donations made during the organization’s grazing event held every summer. The group was able to present BGC Kamloops with a $25,000 cheque Thursday afternoon, which is the largest contribution the not-for-profit has been able to donate so far.

“Farm2Chefs is really all about food security, food sustainability, access to food and knowledge about food, education about food. There’s so many great programs that BGC does that really help with some under-the-radar food security issues that a lot of youth face,” says Farm2Chefs president Jared Summers.

The money will be spent on the PowerStart Breakfast Program, which provides meals for children who attend the centre before school starts for the day, and the Necessity Nook, which is a pantry-style program that allows people to come fill up a hamper with food and other household products on a weekly basis. Over the years, BGC Kamloops Marketing and Development Coordinator Alison Bowman says those programs have fed thousands of children and teens.

“Ranging from our PowerStart program, which is (for) school-aged children to 24-year-old youth,” said Bowman. “We’ve got a whole range of people who we’re going to feed with this, so it’s money from food, for food here in the community. It’s a huge donation and we are so grateful to Farm2Chefs and this event for doing this for us. A huge, huge deal for us.”
