KAMLOOPS — Volunteers with the Kamloops Outdoor Skating Association (KOSA) will be spending their Sunday (Jan. 12) building at skating track at Lac Le Jeune, south of city limits.

Nancy Bepple with the Kamloops Outdoor Skating Association says it comes as the new rink that opened in late December has been a success.

“We know that it was used really well over the Christmas holidays but its nice for skaters to be separate from people playing hockey, so we’re going back and we’re going to put in a skating track,” Bepple said.

Speaking to CFJC Today, Bepple says this new track won’t be as large as the 400-metre speed skating oval that was built at Inks Lake over the past few winters.

“That’s a huge undertaking,” Bepple added. “It took about 20 people to build it. We only have four or five people going up on Sunday so we’re going to have a bit narrower of track, but still something that people can meander around.”

Bepple says volunteers will be heading to Lac Le Jeune around 10 a.m. Sunday, noting anyone who wants to help is welcome, as long as they bring a shovel.

“We won’t have equipment for you so bring your own snow shovel because its a lot of grooming the ice,” Bepple said. “We’re going to have a plow on a quad so the heavy lifting will be done by the machine but we still have to clear the ice with shovels to make it nice.”
