COLLINS: Can we stand four more years of The Donald? Lord, give me strength

Jan 12, 2025 | 6:00 AM

I’VE BEEN DUPED the last few years by the propaganda machine.

I’ll admit it took me a long time to see that the Vladimir Putins, the Xi Jinpings and even the Kim Jong Uns of the world have not been the people to fear, the people who could trigger what would be the last war. To my surprise, the most dangerous man in the world is the head of our closest neighbour. The man who is old, quite possibly suffering some stage of dementia, and threatens to consider using force to gain his objectives of annexing Greenland and returning the Panama Canal to U.S. control.

An expert from Cornell University was recently interviewed about the state of Trump’s mind. He suggested Trump has been showing several signs in the last year or so that indicated reduced cognitive ability and might be a reason for some of Trump’s wild ideas, like his threats of military force to accomplish his agenda. And then there’s the idea of using economic force to bring Canada into line by using large tariffs on goods going into the U.S.

It’s all a bunch of crap. It can’t be taken lightly, because The Donald doesn’t often speak the truth, and so you never know when he‘s going to.

And I don’t believe the rest of Canada would allow that to happen. We don’t have much of a military force but what we do have is pretty good. Our soldiers are better trained, and more combat-ready than most soldiers fighting for the Red, White and Blue.

And we certainly would have support from around the world. Germany and France have already told the U.S. to back off and if things were to escalate, the U.S, could be isolated.

I don’t think Trump understands how this will work. He just doesn’t have a clue. It’s the same with his ideas on tariffs. Laying a big tariff on products coming into the U.S. from Canada will hurt the Canadian economy for a period of time, but it wouldn’t last long. What the egotistical Trump and his lemmings forget is how the reverse works. He cannot comprehend how much prices will rise in the States.

Some examples: 47 per cent of oil used in the U.S. comes from Canada and much of it goes into plastics production. A tariff, or a cessation of delivery, will have the effect of a significant increase in prices of all sorts of goods. The cost of housing will continue to climb because — wait for it — a large percentage of almost all wood products in Canada go to the U.S. So we tell Donald to take a hike and ship more to China, the Philippines and other new customers. Car parts will be more expensive, hydro costs could jump, maybe we back out of the multi-million-dollar plan for new fighter jets. There are lots of ways we can retaliate.

Canada will be hurt by the tariffs for a while but in the long run we will put a lot of pressure on our southern neighbours. Who knows? Maybe we can trump The Donald at his own game.

And if all else fails, a new wall separating us from the Americans wouldn’t be a bad idea, either.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
