TNRD pens agreement with High Bar First Nation

KAMLOOPS – The Thompson Nicola Regional District (TNRD) has made its partnership official with High Bar First Nation, located north of Clinton.

On Friday (Jan. 10) at TNRD headquarters, the two governments signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) formalizing their commitment to work together.

“It’s great to be at the stage where we’re actually signing, but it’s not the finish line,” said Barbara Roden, TNRD board chair.

“It’s the finish line of one process, but it’s the start line of another process because now comes the hard work of actually working to identify the challenges that we all face and also the opportunities that we all face.”

This is the third MOU the TNRD has signed with local First Nations in the last year.

According to its 2023-2026 strategic plan, the TNRD will keep working to establish formal partnerships with its First Nations neighbours.

“The biggest thing is being involved,” said Kukpi7 Jamie Fletcher, of High Bar First Nation. “That’s our objective of all governments is having our agreement with them and working with them. There’ll be a lot of administration, you know, yearly meetings, bringing them to the table and having obligations to come to the table now – instead of always talking about meeting.”
