Spring Election?

MP Caputo doubts a new Liberal leader will bring change to the governing party

KAMLOOPS — ‘This changes nothing’ was the response from the opposition Conservatives to the news of Justin Trudeau’s resignation on Monday morning (Jan. 6).

The Tories have long been calling for what they call a ‘carbon tax election’ in Canada, bringing forward three confidence motions during the fall sitting, with all three being defeated by the Liberals with help from the NDP. With the parliament prorogued until March 24, the Liberal government could fall in the days following, with the need to pass a new throne speech.

“I’ve seen so many broken promises from the NDP that I don’t know what to expect,” said Caputo. “The NDP said that they were going to bring down Trudeau at the earliest possible opportunity and now the game has changed a little bit. But they didn’t have any nuance, they didn’t even say it in Jagmeet Singh’s press release, didn’t mention it one time. It wouldn’t surprise me if the NDP broke another one of their promises and said we are going to go until October.”

The Liberals are currently working to script the terms of a leadership race, with a number of potential candidates coming from within the current caucus — including Chrystia Freeland — and from outside as the Grits may look for refresh. Either way, Caputo believes it will be hard for the Liberals to shake emerge Trudeau’s shadow.

“It wasn’t when they felt Canada was being let down that the knives came out, it was when their polling plummeted. Every single person that supported the prime minister, supported his agenda, an agenda that has led to a record number of people at food banks. They are all responsible and I don’t think it changes one bit what the Liberal Party is and what the Liberal Party has become,” said Caputo.
