COLLINS: Jimmy Carter was one of a kind

Jan 5, 2025 | 6:00 AM

I DOUBT WE WILL EVER SEE another President like Jimmy Carter. If you look at President Carter and contrast him with President-elect Donald Trump, you can see why.

Jimmy Carter cared about helping people, not helping himself, as Trump has been so prone to do. President Carter almost always did what he thought was right, whether it favoured Democrats or Republicans. He wasn’t in the game to make himself a big star. All he wanted was to make a difference in the world.

And that he did. His four years in office were often marked by chaos, which probably cost him a second term. But his humanitarian efforts are unparalleled. He made tremendous strides in helping the downtrodden from Third World countries find a better way to live.

Even after he’d finished his term, he remained gracious and caring. His work with Habitat for Humanity around the world gave new meaning to the word “caring.” President Carter was involved as a Shriner, which fit into his goal as someone who wants to make the world a better place.

A number of years ago, I had the honour — and it was an honour — to interview the president at a Pattison Group conference. We talked for a good half hour — unheard of because it wasn’t going to be on the nightly news. It was just a good man pointing out how we can make a difference. It’s hard to believe there is any politician out there today with the dignity, humility and strength of character of Jimmy Carter.

The president-elect is already lying to Americans when trying to jam through his policies of hate against immigrants — lawful and unlawful — to serve his own political agenda. That agenda has no bearing on the future of the country, only the agenda of one of the biggest asses ever. A travesty if there ever was one. If I were a football coach, I would fire the person who put that playbook together.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
