December in Kamloops was warmer but not drier than usual: Environment Canada

KAMLOOPS — If you thought December in Kamloops was warmer than usual, you would be correct.

Environment Canada meteorologist Chris Doyle says the maximum average temperature in the final month of 2024 was about two degrees warmer than normal.

“The maximum average temperature was 3.8 C. Normally you would expect something a little bit closer to 1.6 C, so almost a couple degrees above average through the month of December,” Doyle told CFJC Today. “Nighttime lows were a little bit warmer than what you’d expect at -0.7 C versus a long term average of -2 C for Kamloops.”

But Doyle says December in Kamloops wasn’t as dry as people may have expected given the warmer weather.

“The rain and snow total, if you add it up for the month, was exactly on the average you would expect,” Doyle said. “[There was] 25.6 mm of precipitation for Kamloops for the month of December, exactly equal to the long term average. A complete statistical fluke, but that’s how it worked out.”

Doyle also says December wasn’t exceptionally windy, noting wind gusts recorded at Kamloops Airport topped out at 58 km/hr on Dec. 6

“You got a few days of gusts into the 40s and 50s, but nothing close to the record which would be up in to the 80s in the month of December,” Doyle said.

The weather agency is still calling for more snow in the Kamloops area this weekend thanks to a cold high pressure system extending from the north down into the Interior.
