Snowfall expected to begin in Kamloops Thursday, continue through the weekend: Environment Canada

KAMLOOPS — It’s too late for a white Christmas at the valley bottom but Kamloops is expecting snow to fall over the next few days.

Rather than an intense storm system, Meteorologist Chris Doyle of Environment Canada says the snow will fall intermittently starting Thursday morning (Jan. 2), thanks to a cold high pressure system extending from the north down into the Interior.

“What we’re getting is, actually, a series of waves landing on the coast, bringing a bit of a shield of precipitation inland and then dissipating — but it’s kind of a routine process for the next few days,” Doyle told CFJC Today. “It’s really more like intervals of snow [Thursday] through Sunday. Each day, you can expect a bit.”

Travellers driving between Kamloops and the Lower Mainland will see snow regardless of whether they choose the Coquihalla Highway or the Fraser Canyon.

Doyle notes road conditions will likely be influenced by a freeze-thaw cycle that comes with temperatures hovering around zero Celsius.

“These systems tend to generate a little bit of warm air that makes across the coastal (mountain) range, so you’re going to see nighttime lows a few degrees below zero but daytime highs up into that one- or two-degree range, so there will be a little bit of freeze-thaw action,” he said.
